Interview with Ruth Letham

In this week's episode, we welcome Dr Ruth Letham – lecturer and Deputy Director of Teaching in the School of Computer science at the University of St Andrews. We discuss Ruth’s journey into Computer Science, as well as her current work in education and her important research into Imposter Syndrome.

The episode begins with a series of questions from Rhona and Ira. They discuss Ruth’s love for video games as a child and how this stemmed an interest in Computer Science.

Also discussed is Ruth’s current research into education and, in particular, Imposter Syndrome. Ruth thoroughly recounts her own experience of Imposter Syndrome, her research around the subject and the great advice she would give to her younger self to boost confidence and make the most of the opportunities that arise.

Ruth additionally speaks of her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated subject, whether she has faced discrimination and the types of workplaces she has chosen to work in, as well as her experience of working with outreach and what we can be doing to increase the diversity of the subject of Computer Science.

Thanks to Ruth for being this week’s guest speaker and as always, if you have a story to tell or a question to ask, please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you!
